NEUROTOXIN & FILLER PRE CARE
Pre-Treatment Considerations:
- Schedule your injection at a time when minor swelling or bruising will not disrupt your social obligations. Each time you are treated, outcomes may vary.
- To lessen the likelihood of bleeding or bruising, discontinue use of blood thinning products for 10 days prior to treatment, if approved by your primary care provider. This includes: aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil), naproxen, Aleve, fish oil, St. John’s Wort, flax, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, garlic, Ginkgo Biloba, ginseng, etc. Alcohol is also to be avoided 24 hours pre- or post- injectable treatment, as it is also a blood thinner. You can consider taking Arnica Montana natural supplement to help bruising (take 3 tablets three times per day starting three days prior to treatment).
- Please notify your provider if you have any history of cold sores, as you will need to consider pre-medicating with an antiviral prescription prior to lip injections.
- Cancel your appointment if you have any open sores in the treatment area. It is important that you alert us of any medical conditions you may have and/or any prescribed medications you are taking prior to your treatment.
Any injection introduces the risk of infection. For this reason, the following list of conditions are taken into consideration when proceeding with injections and your appointment may be delayed.
- Any infection, cold, virus, or flu in the past 30 days
- Any dental procedures in the past 30 days
- Planned dental procedures or cleanings in the next 30 days
- Any surgical procedures in the past 30 days
- Any scheduled surgeries or procedures
- Any immunizations in the past 30 days, or anticipated immunizations
- Any tattooing or permanent makeup within the past 30 days
- Any immunosuppressive/injectable medications (ex: Biologics such as Humira, Skyrizi, Stelara, Enbrel, Taltz, Cosentyx, Tremfya)
- Any allergies to components of dermal fillers or neurotoxins
- Any open sores in areas to be treated
- Pregancy and/or breastfeeding are also contraindicated.
NEUROTOXIN & FILLER POST CARE
NEUROTOXINS:
Botox/Dysport/Xeomin/Daxxify/Jeauveau injections are a quick and safe procedure that have very little impact on usual activity on the day of injection.
To allow these neurotoxins to work optimally in the target muscle, the following precautions are suggested:
- No rubbing or massaging of the injected area for 6 hours after treatment, including facials.
- No strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
- Keep upright for 4 hours — no lying on your front. Avoid activities such as shoe shopping.
- Avoid headwear that is tightly fitted across the forehead.
- Avoid excessive alcohol or blood thinning medication before the treatment to prevent bruising.
- Avoid make up for an hour or so. Mineral make up can be applied immediately after injections.
Normal daily activity can be resumed immediately following treatment. Light exercise can be performed after 4 hours but it is recommended that strenuous activities are avoided for 24 hours.
After 6 hours you may perform light exercise such as:
- Walking
- Jogging
- Upright yoga (avoid any positions that leave you lying flat or upside down)
- Gardening
- It is recommended that you wait 24 hours before attempting any strenuous exercise, including:
- Weight training
- Cross training
- Long distance running
- Yoga (positions where the body is inverted)
In most cases, there will be no side effects to a treatment of neurotoxins. However, because everybody’s physiology is different, people can be affected in different ways. A small minority of people reported the following symptoms:
- Bruising — for the majority of patients, the area of injection will appear no different. For a small minority, some minor bruising may occur.
- Bumps — A few minutes after treatment small bumps may be visible on the skin. These will disappear very quickly.
- Headache — True allergies are extremely rare. Temporary headache is the most commonly reported symptom following injections, though the numbers of patients who report headaches is very small compared with the amount of treatments performed.
DERMAL FILLERS:
- Follow the same protocol as neurotoxins. Avoid massaging the area as it could cause migration.
- Redness and Swelling is expected for a couple of days but could take up to a week.
- The result directly after the treatment should not be seen as the final result. It may take 2-4 weeks to even out.
- After any treatment with fillers, you may FEELlumpy and/or bumpy for a few weeks or even months afterwards. This is normal. The key is not to SEE the lumps.
- Tylenol can be taken for discomfort.
- Cold compresses are fine. DO NOT use ice packs.
- After 3 hours when Lidocaine wears off, if you feel any excessive heat or burning in or close to the injected areas, please call immediately.
